The Riviera Maya in Yucatan, Mexico, may appear to be a typical beach resort. However, for fans of caving, cave explorers and anyone else who likes adventure, beauty is under the surface.
The tropical forest of Yucatan is home to one of the largest underground river in the world, with 153 kilometres. In some areas the land sank and covered the river, giving rise to the cenotes.
Secret River, formerly known as Pool Tunich is one of the underground rivers of the region. Located a few miles from Playa del Carmen, is characterized by a semi-flooded cave. This enables those who are not experts in diving to enjoy a similar experience. The water is so deep, reaching only to waist level. Visitors wear suits and neoprene boots, and a helmet to get through the course of two hours. Expert guides lead visitors along caves with stalagmites around, and you can swim in deeper areas to experience a little of what is caving. The cave system is covered by chandeliers of stalactites and formations helictita, which are structures that look like covered with snow.
