The Quebrada de Humahuaca, in Jujuy province of Argentina, have maintained their religious tradition through Catholicism, but also the worship of Pachamama, meaning Mother Earth in the language Maimara. That religious imprint has to be established on the temples of the Gorge as a National Historic Monument.
The best thing for this tour is to start from south to north. Why? We, the travellers, we feel our ears plugged, a headache and other symptoms, known as “altitude sickness” because it is the effect of the height, just in Puna.
So let’s start Purmamarca. This beautiful city welcomed us with its magnificent Cerro 7 colours and opposite the main square (and only) is the Church of Santa Rosa de Lima. The adobe temple dates from the seventeenth century. Both the woodwork of cactus and its adobe walls and pictures of Cuzco style will be the norm in all these religious sites of the Gorge.
